The HSA Introduction to Sail program is designed to provide new sailors with a safe, enjoyable, and hands-on introduction to the sport of sailing. Offered three times each season—in June, July, and August—the program combines classroom discussion with on-the-water experience under the guidance of experienced HSA instructors.

- Understanding HSA's safety-first approach to sailing instruction.
2. Wind and Weather Awareness
- Learning how wind powers a sailboat.
- Recognizing changing weather conditions.
- Understanding how the weather impacts sailing decisions and safety.
3. Sailboat Familiarization and Rigging
- Introduction to sailboat parts and terminology.
- Basic rigging procedures and equipment setup.
- Pre-launch inspection and preparation.
4. Launching and Boat Handling
- Safe launching and recovery techniques.
- Boarding procedures and crew responsibilities.
- Introduction to steering and sail control.
5. On-the-Water Sailing Experience
- Hands-on instruction with experienced skippers and instructors.
- Learning the basic points of sail and boat movement.
- Practicing steering, sail trim, and boat balance in real sailing conditions.
- Personalized Follow-Up Training
Following the initial lesson:
- Each student is assigned to an experienced skipper for Lessons #2 and #3.
- These follow-up sessions are scheduled during favorable wind conditions within four weeks of the initial class, allowing students to build skills progressively while gaining additional time on the water.
